We are committed to diversity because it benefits us all and allows us to accumulate all kinds of talents and capabilities. Fostering that diversity is key to a company’s competitiveness”. This was highlighted today by Anastasia de las Peñas, corporate director of Employee Experience at MAPFRE, to commemorate International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which is celebrated today. “Companies committed to diversity and inclusion increase the motivation of their employees and enhance the creativity of their teams,” she stated.

At the end of 2024, a total of 1,152 people with disabilities from 27 countries,  4.2% of the workforce, were working for MAPFRE, up by 5.7% compared to the previous year.

The commitment to inclusion is a key element of its Sustainability Plan 2024-2026, which includes measures to promote the inclusion of this group in the company and improve their quality of life and that of their families

An inclusive workplace

MAPFRE has its own methodology to measure the impact of integrating employees with disabilities into the company’s workplaces, to gain a better understanding of its contribution to improving their quality of life. Recently, a total of 80 employees with disabilities who joined the company less than 3 years ago, located in 10 countries in which the Group operates, responded to a survey by saying that their integration into the workplace has contributed to improving their quality of life, with a score of 8.4 out of 10, thanks to the inclusive work environment at the company. The survey also assessed other specific aspects such as their physical, material, and emotional well-being, the quality of their interpersonal and social relationships, and their professional development within the company.

Awareness-raising and volunteering

In Spain, MAPFRE has run a variety of integration programs for people with disabilities, such as “Programa Familiares”, through the Konecta Foundation, which offers job guidance to the family members with disabilities of MAPFRE’s employees in Spain. The project consists of a personalized itinerary for each person with disabilities in order to increase their chances of finding employment. Since its inception, the program has provided support to 118 relatives of employees with disabilities, and 91 employment contracts have been signed.

The company’s collective agreement also includes financial aid for employees with a disability equal to or greater than 33%, and financial aid for employees with relatives with disabilities under their responsibility

In addition, a variety of awareness-raising initiatives have been run, including MAPFRE’s Global Disability Program “Miradas sin etiquetas”, aimed at generating a culture sensitive to disabilities and in which a total of 13,015 employees from around the world participated; talks, workshops, and other awareness-raising activities for staff and the Global Unconscious Bias Program, which has now been talen by a total of 9,712 employees from around the world. In addition, during 2024 a total of 281 corporate volunteering activities were performed to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities.

More diversity

MAPFRE is a signatory of the Diversity Charter, an initiative pursued by Fundación Diversidad in Spain with a view to fostering inclusive work environments. Since signing up in 2020, the company has integrated principles and values as part of its strategy for diversity, inclusion, equity, and advocacy for equal opportunities in terms of gender, age, disability, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, or any other social or cultural condition.

It also forms part of the International Labour Organization (ILO) Global Business and Disability Network, which aims to help make corporate employment policies and practices more inclusive of people with disabilities worldwide, as well as to increase awareness of the positive relationship between disability inclusion and business growth.
